Why You Need More Than 100 Followers On Medium
--
Because numbers can fluctuate!
Recently Medium announced some changes to their Partner Program and that got everyone on the site in a bit of a stir. Although it did provide a handy topic for everyone to write a dozen stories about, you know?
They (Medioum) said that from the end of 2021, if you wanted to stay in the program you had to have published a story in the last 6 months and you had to have at least 100 followers.
That first part is where every newbie to the platform panicked slightly and had lots of people writing about getting new writers up to the magic 100.
The thing is, I don’t think you need to focus on getting to 100. In my opinion, you need at least double that, if not 300 -500.
Here’s why:
- Every so often Medium does a purge of all it’s bot accounts. That’s good — eliminating spam bots/accounts is always a good thing. But, if you have 130 followers and 50 of them are spam, then overnight you could see your follower count drastically drop.
- People follow you for a myriad of reasons — they like you, they like your writing style/content or they want you to follow them back. Either way, they don’t have to follow you or even stay as a follower forever! They can always choose to unfollow!
So, it makes sense to aim higher than 100.
There’s really no need to panic about follower numbers though. If you’re consistent and are active on the platform, then the numbers should rise in tandem with your output.
It’s the same as with any other platform, whether that’s a writing one or a social media one. Once you put in the time and effort and decide you’re going to stick around for a while, then of course you’ll make progress.
Just focus on the writing. What’s that saying? Focus on the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves.
